Many insects, animals and birds are drawn by the copious nectar of the flowers. Ecological ValueĪpart from their use by humans for arrow-quivers, these trees are important components of their local ecology. In this landscape it is usually one of the most conspicuous tree species, having made an impression on visitors as far back as Governor Simon van der Stel in 1685, and even today it is still a favourite with tourists. It is missing from the extremely dry coastal regions of the Namib Desert, as well as the sandy inland Kalahari Desert, preferring uneven, stony country. In Namibia, this species occurs in a wide swath from the Orange River northward to about the Etosha Pan. In the western part of the Northern Cape Province, it spreads a bit southward from the river into the region known as Namaqualand, of which many people consider it to be characteristic. In South Africa, its distribution is centred on the lower reaches of the Orange River, from the region of Kuruman till where the river discharges into the Atlantic Ocean. This is essentially a desert and semi-desert species. The flowers are rather short and rounded in shape, compared to other aloe flowers. They branch into three to five racemes, bearing the yellow flowers. The inflorescences arise from amidst the rosettes at the tips of the branches, and are fairly short and carried erect. The flowers appear from June to August – this is wintertime in the Southern Hemisphere. Typically, the trunk tapers from a thick base towards the top, with the first branches appearing about halfway up. It is covered with thick, corky, yellowish bark that flakes into sharp-edged sections on the main trunk, but remains smooth and whitish on the branches. The stem can get quite stout – more than a metre in diameter at the base. Unlike in the single-stemmed tree-like aloes, in this species the old dry leaves drop off so that the leafy rosettes only remain at the tips of the branches, leaving the rest of their length clean. The leaves are about 30cm long and 5cm wide, somewhat bluish- green in colour, and arranged in a spiralled rosette in old plants, but in young plants, neatly arrayed in four vertical rows. These rosettes at the tips of the forked branches usually form a dense, rounded crown. Yet at close inspection it is still clearly an aloe, with a rosette of pointed, thickly-succulent leaves, bearing a margin of thorns, at the tip of each branch. This species is one of only a few species of aloe that reaches tree proportions: it can grow to 7m in height. A hollowed-out section is then closed off at one end with a piece of leather leather straps are fitted to it so it can be slung over the shoulders, and voilà – a quiver! Appearance Consequently, branches can easily be hollowed out. This tree doesn't have real 'wood' but a much softer pulpy, fibrous tissue in the trunk and branches. The name 'quiver tree' comes from the habit of the San People, or Bushmen, of using the branches of this aloe for making quivers to contain their poison arrows. This is one of the most branched and tree-like species of aloe. The species name, dichotoma, means 'divided in two' and refers to the way the branches divide, repeatedly forking in two. Scientific NameĪloe is the genus name for all the species of aloe. It is indeed one of the biggest members of the genus Aloe and is well known to succulent enthusiasts. The quiver tree is a remarkable large, tree-like species of succulent plant that occurs in the dry desert and semi-desert regions of South Africa and Namibia. That’s what happened to me when I moaned about Flash’s lack of pro-level animation capabilities. When Toon Boom Storyboard came out in June 2006, I questioned the value of storyboarding software, for four basic reasons:Įxpressive Freedom.Be careful what you wish for: You might get it. First, the main purpose of a storyboard is to tell a story with a minimum of fuss and bother, and a maximum of verve and expressiveness. Yes, the storyboard artist does break the story into scenes and shots, thereby advancing the visual thinking process toward the final product. But the main thing is to let creativity flow, to give the characters life, expression and feeling. For many artists, that is pen or pencil and paper.ĭuring storyboarding, artists should use the tools they're most comfortable with, the tools they can use without thinking about them. For others, it may be Flash, Illustrator or Photoshop. Let the artist work in his or her favored medium for this critical creative phase of animation. This is the place to minimize technology and maximize freedom. It's the wrong place to interpose anything that could come between the artist and his or her inspiration. This would seem to argue against having any software specifically targeted at creating storyboards. An important function of a storyboard is to allow the viewer - be it an investor, producer, director or animator - to get a quick visual overview of the whole story. A computer screen is inherently the wrong place to do that, because it can't show you all the drawings at once in one long, uninterrupted sweep, the way you see them on a corkboard. Storyboard artists I questioned confirmed that they were happy with corkboards. They seemed to have little interest in storyboarding software.Ĭost. Even assuming the artist masters the storyboarding software completely, so it becomes second nature, what can storyboarding software offer that is worth $900 (Toon Boom Storyboard's list price)?Įfficiency. Finally, if you use your animation program to create your boards, you'll also create assets, which can be integrated with maximum efficiency into the final project. If you're using Flash to animate, for instance, why not just use Flash to create your storyboard? If you're using a Toon Boom product, like Toon Boom Studio, Toon Boom Solo or Toon Boom Harmony, surely any of these programs is capable of creating storyboard art.ĭespite these doubts, I went ahead with testing Toon Boom Storyboard. It was easy to get oriented and start creating storyboards. Having used the Toon Boom Studio animation software was a help, since many of the tools (such as drawing tools) and concepts (such as the use of the camera) were similar. The user interface is easy to use in Toon Boom Storyboard. The process of getting oriented and creating storyboards is quick. One big difference between Toon Boom Studio and Toon Boom Storyboard is that Storyboard forces you to think in shots and panels. In contrast, Toon Boom Studio allows you, though by no means forces you, to organize your animation into scenes. To put it another way, Toon Boom Storyboard forces you to think like a storyboard artist.īut it goes beyond that. The Storyboard timeline is a mini-storyboard (minus text elements such as dialogue). The Toon Boom Storyboard timeline0 is automatically divided into discrete shots and panels. With Storyboard, you can see what your boards are going to look like. Studio just doesn't have that capability. Clearly, this makes Storyboard a better environment for building storyboards. In addition, Storyboard has:A "Panel" tab for entering dialogue, action notes, slugging (timing for the panel), and notes, for the current panel or shot. Only the information associated with this particular panel or shot is visible in this tab.A "Storyboard" tab where you can store a script that will be visible from all panels and shots (The first figure above shows the Panel tab.)When you export as a PDF for printing, the Panel tab information is used to construct the storyboard, as shown in the figure below left. As standard, the Equinox comes connected to the OnStar technology and Bluetooth connectivity. The infotainment system of the Chevrolet Equinox is centrally placed and is adequately equipped even from the base variant. How intuitive is the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox’s infotainment system? In terms of cargo capacity, the Honda CR-V’s maximum cargo capacity of 70.9 cubic feet is the highest in the segment, while Tucson does remain considerably behind its competitors. While space for the occupants is similar in all vehicles, the Ford Escape’s rear-seat legroom does feel like a letdown. In comparison, all four SUVs have similar seating capacities. The cargo capacity on offer with the Equinox may not be the highest in the segment but a total trunk volume of 31.5 cubic feet with all seats in an upright position can accommodate three luggage bags without any difficulty. However, the steering does lack engagement and reduces the driving pleasure. The reclining rear-seats are a blessing in disguise on long trips coupled with a nimble ride quality, the Equinox does gain ascendancy over its competitors. The seats are praiseworthy, for they accord maximum space and comfort. The Chevrolet Equinox has a total seating capacity of five passengers. However, its small fuel tank does put it at a disadvantage when the total range covered is considered. The Honda CR-V, on the other hand, is the most fuel-efficient car in the segment averaging 25 miles per gallon of fuel. In comparison, the Ford Escape and Hyundai Tucson are equally economical as the Chevrolet Equinox. The ability of Equinox to cover the highest range and distance reduces the cost of running and maintaining the SUV. Its fuel tank has a total capacity of 18.8-gallons, which is the largest in the segment, allows it to cover a total distance of 376 and 545.2 miles in the city and on the highway, respectively. Combined, its efficiency of 23 miles per gallon of fuel is a sigh of relief in a competitive segment. It can average 20 MPG when cruising in the city and 29 MPG when sprinting on the highway. The Chevrolet Equinox is revered in the market for its economical fuel figures, and the 2012 iteration is evidence of its abilities. The Honda CR-V is distinctive by virtue of its 5-speed automatic transmission setup. In the segment, all four vehicles make use of an inline-4 engine and are channeled as all-wheel-drive variants. In the quarter-mile run, the Ford Escape continues to assert its dominance. While the Ford Escape and Hyundai Tucson are fastest to the 60 MPH mark clocking 9.2 seconds, the Honda CR-V is the slowest, taking 9.9 seconds. In comparison, all SUVs in the segment have eerily similar performance figures. As standard, all trims of the Chevrolet Equinox, irrespective of their engine configuration, come mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with an overdrive facility and can be channeled as a front-wheel or an all-wheel-drive variant. The optional engine is a 3.0L V6 engine that is good for 264 hp and 222 lb.-ft of torque. It comes equipped with a large number of features, including all specifications of the lower trims and additional inclusions like leather seats, mirror memory, and rear parking aid. We recommend buying the top-rack variant of the Chevrolet Equinox for its high price-to-performance ratio. The Equinox is also available with an optional engine which is a V6 unit. As standard, it comes equipped with an alarm, keyless entry, and steering mounted controls. It falls in a price range that extends from $23,050 for its base variant and goes up to $30,970 for its top-rack variant. All trims of the Equinox are distinguished from one another by the set of features they possess. The Chevrolet Equinox is available in four different trims, each of which shares the standard engine setup and is offered with two drivetrain options.
